Passengers advised to postpone unnecessary travel; delays expected during morning rush

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL - Please be advised that the National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning for north central and northeast Illinois. Significant icing is expected due to freezing rain beginning at 6 p.m. this evening (February 5) and continuing through 6 a.m. Wednesday (February 6) morning. Travel is discouraged.

An Ice Storm Warning means significant amounts of ice accumulation will make travel dangerous or impossible. Travel could be nearly impossible on untreated surfaces. Snapped power lines and falling tree branches are also possible. Please postpone unnecessary travel. Delays are expected, especially Wednesday morning.

If you must travel, please:

- Move slowly.

- Take short steps or shuffle for stability.

- Bend slightly forward and walk flat-footed with your center of gravity directly over your feet as much as possible.

- Use handrails for support.

- Keep your hands out of your pockets.

- Look ahead. A sidewalk completely covered with ice may require travel along its grassy edge for traction.

- Don't text or read while walking.
